Historical Background & Heritage
Griddhakuta (Vulture Peak) derives its name from its peak shaped like a sitting vulture and because vultures gathered on its rocky ledges. It was Lord Buddha's favorite retreat during his stays in Rajagriha.
Emperor Ashoka and Chinese pilgrims Xuanzang and Faxian documented the stone pathways built by King Bimbisara to ascend the hill to hear Buddha's preachings.
Spiritual Significance & Importance
Griddhakuta is one of the most sacred Mahayana Buddhist sites in the world. It is the birthplace of the Prajnaparamita Sutras, Heart Sutra, and Lotus Sutra.
