Historical Background & Heritage
The Vishwa Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda) was conceived by Nichidatsu Fujii (Fujii Guruji), founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist order, and built with support from Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in 1969 to mark the 2,500th Buddha Jayanti.
Standing 40 meters high on the peak of Ratnagiri Hill, it is recognized as the highest Peace Pagoda in the world.
Spiritual Significance & Importance
The Stupa is a global symbol of universal peace, non-violence (Ahimsa), and brotherhood. On its four sides, gilded bronze statues depict the four key events in Lord Buddha's life: Birth, Enlightenment, First Sermon, and Parinirvana.
Reaching the summit via the historic single-seater chairlift ropeway provides panoramic views of Rajgir's five sacred hills.
